Adrenal Health
Dr. Wilson works with adult men and women to improve their overall health by optimizing their hormones. In addition to using standard laboratory testing, similar to those ordered by a conventional doctor, Dr. Wilson utilizes more specific markers and advanced laboratory testing to provide an in-depth assessment of your health. With more data about your health, Dr. Wilson is able to better understand your current health status and provide more finely tuned and comprehensive treatment plans. He often recommends assessing three important areas; sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, thyroid function and adrenal function.
Adrenal Assessment
Tired? Not motivated? Feeling ‘burnt out’? Lack of stamina? Can’t get out of bed in the morning even though you had a ‘normal’ amount of sleep? Binge eat? Have sugar cravings then blood sugar crashes? Experienced chronic or major episodes of stress? Have chronic pain? Can’t fall or stay asleep? Have bad food allergies? Get sick often? If you said ‘yes’, to some or most of these questions having your cortisol checked and adrenal function properly assessed would be a good idea.
Standard assessment for adrenal function includes serum cortisol. This approach is appropriate for assessing gross abnormalities such as Addison’s Disease but is not appropriate to assess for adrenal dysfunction.
Dr. Wilson utilizes a sophisticated saliva test to assess the adrenal function including cortisol and the inactive form, cortisone. This test taken throughout the day provides a more accurate reflection of the adrenal gland since it functions differently in the morning, afternoon and at night. This test also provides information on DHEA and insulin.
In addition to this saliva test, Dr. Wilson also uses a 24-hour urine test to assess different adrenal hormones as needed.
Adrenal Treatment
Adrenal dysfunction is not commonly treated unless it is related to Addison’s Disease or other potentially life-threatening disease.
Dr. Wilson recognizes the different phases of adrenal dysfunction and using the multi-point saliva test as well as symptoms can accurately identify which phase you may be in. To improve adrenal function he uses a variety of nutritional supplements. He also uses adrenal replacement medication, hydrocortisone for those with low adrenal function and or adrenal burn out.
