Dr. Wilson works with adult men and women to improve their overall health by optimizing their hormones. In addition to using standard laboratory testing, similar to those ordered by a conventional doctor, Dr. Wilson utilizes more specific markers and advanced laboratory testing to provide an in-depth assessment of your health. With more data about your health, Dr. Wilson is able to better understand your current health status and provide more finely tuned and comprehensive treatment plans. He often recommends assessing three important areas; sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, thyroid function and adrenal function.

Dr. Wilson uses bio-identical hormones. These hormones are the exact same in molecular structure to ones naturally occurring in your body. Research has shown that BHRT can reduce the risk of cancer in women and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in men and women. BHRT is also beneficial for menopausal related symptoms, osteoporosis, anti-aging, brain health, etc.

As an integrative naturopathic doctor, Dr. Wilson provides bio-identical hormone treatment as well as natural treatment options for hormone optimization for men and women.

Assessment

Men:

Standard laboratory tests to assess male sex hormones may include PSA (total), testosterone (total), FSH and LH. In addition to using the standard tests Dr. Wilson includes a more comprehensive assessment. This often includes total and free PSA, total and free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), Estrogens (E1, E2), DHEA.

Women:

Standard laboratory tests to assess female sex hormones may include estrogens, progesterone and testosterone. These are almost always taken from a blood sample. Cancer markers are also sometimes assessed. These include CA-125 and CEA.

In addition to using the standard blood tests, Dr. Wilson uses a more comprehensive assessment. This includes a 24-hour urine test to assess common sex hormones and their metabolites including 2-OH, the ‘good’ estrogen metabolite, 16-OH, the ‘bad’ estrogen metabolite, and 4-0H, the ‘very bad’ estrogen metabolite. Experiencing hair loss? This test can identify if your hair loss is due to a ‘bad’ metabolite of testosterone which Dr. Wilson can address. This urine test also provides information regarding adrenal health including cortisol and cortisone levels. Dr. Wilson recommends this test initially and once per 1-2 years for female patients seeking BHRT.

Treatment

Men:

Standard treatment for men seeking hormone replacement therapy includes testosterone gel at low concentrations. This is often not sufficient to optimize testosterone levels and reduce symptoms. And furthermore, may cause blood tests to become abnormal.

Dr. Wilson uses compounded bio-identical topical testosterone and/or injections as needed. He also uses HCG and Clomid for patients with low testosterone who don’t require testosterone replacement. For those patients seeking alternatives to testosterone therapy, Dr. Wilson uses a variety of herbs, supplements and dietary interventions to support testosterone naturally.

In addition to testosterone replacement or support, Dr. Wilson also often recommends other supportive agents such as DHEA, and medications or supplements to keep ‘bad’ testosterone and estrogen in optimal ranges.

 Women:

Be careful! Standard conventional treatment for women seeking hormone replacement includes various forms of synthetic estrogen and progestins that are NOT bio-identical. This is potentially dangerous as research has shown that synthetic, non-bio-identical hormones are not safe and may increase the risk of cancer in women.
