Metal on Metal Hip Joint Replacements Can Lead to Serious Consequences...

If you’ve had a joint replacement its likely that your new joint is a metal on metal (MoM) implant. Cobalt and chromium are common metals used to make MoM implants and over time they can cause problems.

MoM implants have been associated with a toxic accumulation of these metals not only in the joint implant and surrounding tissues, but also in the blood stream. This means that the MoM implants can result in damage to other parts of your body including your brain and heart.

Cobalt toxicity is known to produce a variety of local symptoms and systemic symptoms.

Local symptoms can include damage to muscle fibers, joint inflammation, joint pain, muscle spasms and even tissue death.

Systemic symptoms of cobalt toxicity are even more severe and can be debilitating. Mild symptoms include fatigue, and anorexia. More severe symptoms include severe and sometimes irreversible damage to vision and hearing, and various neurological symptoms as cobalt toxicity can cause brain inflammation, brain swelling and reduced brain metabolism.

Cobalt toxicity has also been shown to be a mitochondrial toxin, and can cause autoimmune disease and severe heart toxicity, which can be fatal.

A recent study found that most patients with cobalt containing hip, knee or shoulder implantations had excessive high cobalt levels associated with encephalopathy; swelling of the brain.

The International Consortium of Orthopaedic Registries (ICOR) and other international regulatory agencies have issued alerts and safety communications related to MoM implants. In addition, there are an increasing number of reports in orthopedic literature, data from international orthopedic implant registries as well as presentations from professional/scientific meets that have notes complications from MoM implants.

If you’ve have a metal on metal joint replacement and are having abnormal or unexplained symptoms tell your doctor immediately.
