Patient Information: Semaglutide & Tirzepatide for Weight Loss
(Valley Integrative Health – Medical Weight Loss Program)
What Are Semaglutide & Tirzepatide?
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are prescription medications used to support healthy, sustainable weight loss.
They work by regulating appetite, improving blood sugar control, and enhancing fullness after meals.
Semaglutide (GLP-1)
Tirzepatide (GLP-1 + GIP dual-agonist)
Both are given as once-weekly injections.
How Do They Work?
These medications help with weight loss through several mechanisms:
Reduce appetite & cravings
Increase fullness after meals
Slow stomach emptying, leading to steadier blood sugar
Improve insulin sensitivity
Support fat loss while preserving lean muscle (especially with adequate protein + strength training)
Tirzepatide often results in faster and greater weight loss, but both are highly effective.
Expected Benefits
Many patients experience:
✓ Decreased hunger and snacking
✓ Better energy and mood
✓ Improved metabolic markers
✓ Lower inflammation
✓ Weight loss averaging 1–2+ pounds per week, depending on dose and lifestyle
Both medications have been shown to reduce risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease—an added benefit for appropriate patients.
How Are They Taken?
Once per week, same day each week
Injected into the abdomen, thigh, or back of arm
You may rotate injection sites
Start on a low dose and increase gradually to minimize side effects
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are temporary and dose-related:

Heartburn
These symptoms usually improve within 1–2 weeks or with dose adjustments.

Rare but Serious Risks
Although uncommon, patients should be aware of:
Pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain)
Severe nausea/vomiting with dehydration

Possible thyroid C-cell tumors (seen in rodents, not in humans; avoided in patients with personal/family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2)
Let your provider know if you have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or severe GI disorders.
